Matjana Inaugural Fundraising Party
Written by Michelle Brear
At the Matjana Community Preschool inaugural fundraising party, Ndabeni’s women and children turned out in droves and put on a remarkable display of traditional Swazi dancing. It was the first “test” of the community’s willingness to support the preschool project- they passed with flying colours. Not only did women of the community respond to the organisers’ request to organize a dance performance (which was spectacular and vastly exceeded expectations) they organized amongst themselves to fetch water and firewood for the day.
People of different
ages preformed different Dances.
But there are no
age limits.
Over R1000 was raised for the preschool on the day. While this is only half what we’d hoped to raise, the day was still considered a huge success! Through the fundraiser the women of Kaphunga demonstrated their motivation and ability to support the preschool, tested the idea of a village fundraiser and bought members of the Kaphunga community together for an incredibly enjoyable day. We’re confident that our next fundraiser will raise well over R2000!
Married Women preform the Lutsango Dance
In this dance women pretend to be cooking, a job they traditionally perform in the Swazi home. They wear traditional clothing. The sicolo (headdress) shows that they are married women.
